ACF and Centro Para Puerto Rico

Regional Administrator, Joyce A. Thomas, Capt. Mary Riley, Director, Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness Response (OHSEPR), and Bronia E Ashford, Management and Project Specialist, conducted a site visit to Centro Para Puerto Rico on November 14, 2014.  Sila M. Calderón founded the Centro Para Puerto Rico. Sila María Calderón is a Puerto Rican politician, businesswoman, and philanthropist who served as the eighth Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico from 2001 to 2005. She is the first and, to date, only woman elected to that office.

The Centro Para Puerto Rico carries out projects, programs and services that address issues of poverty services.  It also works to improve the role of women in society, urban revitalization, ethical values and social responsibility.  Their specific focus areas are; to increase the opportunities and abilities to get support, encourage conflict resolution, and promote empowerment and achievement of economic independence.  Denise L. Santos and Cassandra M. Vega from the Centro Para Puerto Rico hosted Administration for Children and Families officials.

Region II Head Start Association Conference, Caribe Hilton, San Juan, Puerto Rico

ACF Region II staff with Mrs. Wilma Pastrana Jimenez, First Lady of Puerto Rico and Wanda Jaime, President of the Puerto Rico Head Start Association, Region II Head Start Association Conference Chair

Representatives from Region II participated in the Head Start Association Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico as Head Start celebrated its 50th Anniversary, November 10 to 13, 2014.  The conference theme, “Being Agents of Change” was underscored through opening remarks provided by Ann Linehan, Acting Director, Office of Head Start.  As a result, conference presenters and panelists targeted their remarks and presentations on promoting change and professional development in Head Start programs as well as highlighting the quality program improvements of Head Start programs and services over 50 years.  Featured presenters at the conference; Honorable Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Honorable Luisa “Piti” Gándara, House of Representatives of Puerto Rico, and Mrs. Wilma Pastrana Jimenez, First Lady of Puerto Rico.  Regional Administrator, Joyce A. Thomas, provided the keynote address during the conference’s opening luncheon.  Several ACF regional office staff attended the conference to support and technical assistance to the conference participants.
